Mission statement:
The mission of the Police Athletic League of Indianapolis, Inc. is to
involve the at-risk youth of the Indianapolis community in educational,
cultural, and fitness activities that will deter crime, increase
self-esteem and promote a positive relationship with police.
What is
PAL?
The Police Athletic League of Indianapolis has been a part of the
Indianapolis community for 60 years, working to involve at-risk youth of
our city in educational, cultural, and athletic activities that are
designed to deter crime, increase self-esteem, and promote positive
relationships with the police. PAL provides a positive link between the
Indianapolis Police Department and the youth of our city. The hope is
that a trusting relationship between children and law enforcement role
models will exist through structured activities, healthy lifestyles, and
mentoring relationships that promote personal growth.
PAL is staffed by 1 IPD Captain, 1 IPD Lieutenant, 2 IPD Sergeants, 11
Officers and 4 civilians.
History of IPD PAL
PAL was founded in 1940, by JR Townsend and Chief Michael Morrissey, &
operated within the Indianapolis Police Department until 1973 when it
was established as its own nonprofit organization. It now operates as
the Youth Services Branch of IPD and is governed by a civilian Board of
Directors and serves more than 20,000 youth.
